Introducing The Icons Issue.
The Oxford dictionary defines an icon as ‘a person or thing that people admire and see as a symbol of a particular idea or way of life’. At Neptune, we chose to look at it in the idea of a person leading life with a singular point of view.
Few faces have marked their time like that of Lauren Hutton: the self declared tom boy’s gap-toothed smile and blue eyes have gazed up at readers from countless glossy pages for close to six decades. From her close working relationship with photographer Richard Avedon to signing the first million dollar modeling contract in history, Hutton was everywhere but was only working to give her the means to travel the world.
“Mrs. Vreeland was a genius and a true original, which is very seldom seen, especially in fashion, because everybody’s learned to copy everybody else. She looked like nobody else I’d ever seen, like some great bird. She sent me on a trip to Persia and then to Bali.
I think because she thought there was something freaky about me. And she was right: there was something odd about me… I never saw anybody socially. I just worked and slept and went to the movies with Bob Williamson. Then the day after a shoot we’d go off. The first trip we ever took was to Morocco in 1965 or ‘66. Eileen Ford said I could go for two weeks, but I stayed a month. The next time, I stayed two months. Then that became a habit: two months on, two months off. It was really smart because now all those places are over, finished, gone. Most of the tribes and hunter-gatherers are gone.”
