Introducing Issue Eleven cover 4 of 6: Studio Peregalli Sartori: Illusion of Time and Space

The name Studio Peregalli Sartori travels only from knowing lips to tightly sealed mouths: Pierre Bergé, Marc Jacobs, Dries Van Noten, John Currin, to name only a few, have quietly passed the mellifluous surname among themselves over the years. Before joining forces in the 1990s,  Laura Sartori Rimini and Roberto Peregalli served their apprenticeship under another sacred monster, Renzo Mongiardino. “He taught us an enormous amount, particularly rigor and attention to detail,” Laura observes simply.

When the two meet, the partnership seems almost inevitable. “We thought we had our own taste. Renzo was more flamboyant, more theatrical than we were. We immediately began talking, for instance, about using salvaged materials,” Laura Sartori Rimini recalls. “The idea that years, that life itself, had already left a patina upon the material was essential to us.”

“There is the place, obviously, but everything begins with the client. That is where the psychological dimension of a project comes in. The first meetings are really only about getting to know one another. It’s like setting off on a long journey together: we have to sense that we are approaching it in the same spirit, that we are on the same wavelength. We are also there to reassure them. This idea of the home as a refuge is essential to our relationships.”

“Next, a total harmony with the place, both locally—the house, the castle or the chalet—and more broadly—a country, its culture,” Sartori muses. “It is essential that our projects exist in harmony with their surroundings, especially in the globalized world in which we live. That is far more important than any signature we might impose.” This is not, however, an exercise in copying. “We don’t make period rooms. We take our research extremely far, over several months, before reinterpreting a taste, a spirit.”
